Masculinity has always been modeled after the traits of toughness, competitiveness and violence, and these are traits that the gaming industry has been keen to play upon through both intense marketing and actual game design. It is harder than ever to perform masculinity in non-toxic ways, or know what that means. This will be an open discussion session focusing on a sharing two way conversation with the audience about masculine identities and our collective struggles with masculinity.

Queer characters and themes are uncommon in games, but of the representations that exist, some identities see the spotlight more often than others. Queerly Represent Me is an organisation devoted to researching and collating games that represent queer perspectives and, in the year since its inception, we have discovered that positive representations of asexuality, nonbinary genders, and polyamory are particularly unusual. There is no simple formula, no universal rule. There are many roadblocks to achieving empathy. The choices we make in our game design can even subvert our intent and decrease empathy for others.
